This project by CROSS in Zlín was implemented to prioritize public transport on the city’s
roads. In total, 88 vehicles were fitted with on- board units, communication devices and multi- functional displays for their drivers. Meanwhile, 41 traffic controllers were equipped for two- way communication with the vehicles.
The system is fully operational and functions in the following manner. A traffic controller receives notification that a bus is coming or has pulled into a nearby stop. As a result, a green light is held for the vehicle and the driver is informed about it. This allows the driver the luxury of waiting longer at the stop in the knowledge that the lights will turn or stay green when the bus reaches them.
This has cut travel times by 20% on some routes, and timetables have been adjusted to take advantage of the situation.
Initiated in 2011, CROSS Zlín was the first organization in the Czech Republic and the world authorized to implement a high-speed weighing station for the purposes of direct enforcement. The station is equipped with a CrossWIM weigh-in-motion unit - a certified measuring tool for automatically weighing vehicles in motion to an accuracy of ± 5% for gross weight and ± 11% for individual axle weight.
Featuring an automatic ticketing system, the roads in question have benefited from a substantially higher level of protection against damage by overloaded vehicles, dramatically lengthening their lifespan and leading to significant cost savings on repairs.
“The Czech Republic was the first to introduce legal regulations that enable direct enforcement of violation by overloaded vehicles based on high-speed, weigh-in-motion scales.”
It is currently equipped with more than 650 units, all of them integrated with the METIS system, facilitating the monitoring of over 55,000 km of roads throughout the country. It is an ongoing project and more stations continue to be added to it.
METIS software and related modules (SSWM, WMi) are used for this purpose by the national road authority and a number of other entities – cities, regional authorities and private companies (e.g. technical services).
